Does anyone know of a good travel-sized blow dryer and/or hair straightener?

I am going overseas for a study abroad program for three weeks and need something highly portable since I am packing light. I like my straightener extremely hot and the plates wide and will want the blow dryer to be good quality (no nasty frizz and burnt hair).

I am not opposed to spending money on these things, but I have read the reviews for CHI and definitely want to stay away from those.

So this morning I was curling my hair, and all the sudden I hear this crackling sound

Okay so I have curly hair, but it's like a mess and not a way I would ever wear it in public. I straighten my hair everyday during the school year. It's the only way I like it. Problem is, my hair doesn't stay straight! It looks amazing before I leave my house and of course right after i get done straightening it, but by the time I get to school, there's bumps/waves all over the place! It looks horrible. I've been through a couple straighteners already. I started out with a cheap, thin conair one. Now I have a $50 2 inch conair one which I got for my last birthday. It works really good other times, but for some reason when it comes to school, it doesn't keep my hair straight. I don't know if it's my hair itself, or the straightener. My birthday's coming up next month and I'm thinking about asking for a chi turbo. Will it actually keep my hair straight? Is it worth the money?

I have a CHI straightener, and it's awesome, for straightening, but I've read ads that say it straightens AND curls. I have no idea what technique to use with a CHI flat iron to get curls.
