Product Description
This is an original 1935 color print of women farmers in China picking mulberry leaves and feeding the leaves to the silkworms. Si Ling Chi was the first Empress of China (2640 BCE), and while watching silkworms in her garden, discovered how to process the thread of the cocoon into a new cloth. The caption writes, "Ancient is an unavoidable word when you write about the silk business. Legend credits the Chinese Empress Si Ling Chi (Leizu) with first showing-- some thousands of years before Christ-- how the wild silkworm could be cultivated by her subjects..."

This piece was illustrated by Utamaro. There is no visible artist signature.

Please note that there is printing on the reverse.
